I have an older brother and sister and a few nieces and nephews so family get-togethers where and still are full of games *Describe the house you live in.* Ha ha - a cross between a building site and toy shop! I have two small children and a large dog! *What do you like most about Addiscombe ?* Most people are friendly and helpful and there is a real community feel about it. *What would you like to change in Addiscombe?* More local businesses *What do you do when not working?* Spending time with my family, playing golf and going on holiday *You may not know it but I am rather good at…..* Horse riding *You may not know it but I am no good at….* Spelling and grammer! *I dream of…?* Other than being a successful business owner, I dream of living in the countryside with lots of animals and family *Describe yourself in 5 words* Considerate, loyal, enthusiastic, ambitious and honest Nico Michael – Addiscombe Dry Cleaners How long has Addiscombe Dry Cleaners been trading in Addiscombe? Since 1974 How long have you owned the business? 27 Years since 1984 What goods/services do you offer? We undertake Dry Cleaning, repairs and alterations of all personal items such as coats, suits, dresses etc. as well as household goods such as curtains cushion covers and settee covers. We also clean evening and bridal wear. We offer a laundry service and an ironing service and have a carpet/upholstery cleaning machine for hire. We also have a first class shoe repair service. Describe what it was like when you grew up I came to England from Cyprus when I was twelve years old to join my mum and dad who came to England a couple years earlier, leaving me behind with my sister to finish the Greek junior school. With no knowledge of English at all I went straight into the bottom class of the 2^nd year at Kennington County Secondary School for Boys. My school was about a mile and a quarter from home, no school runs in those days, dad left home for work at 5.00 am and mum at 7.00 am. I had to get up and get ready and walk to school. I would walk back home for lunch to save my 50p per week dinner/pocket money to go towards my portable reel to reel tape recorder(£25.00 in those days). Early school days were difficult as you can imagine. A Saturday job in a fruit and veg. shop in the Brixton arcade helped tremendously with the language. I left school at eighteen and then went to Derby College of Art and Technology to do a three year course in Textile Design and Technology hence the connection with Dry Cleaning. Describe the house you live in Comfortable. What do you like most about Addiscombe? I love the community spirit. Considering the diverse backgrounds of its residents Addiscombe still has that village community feel. What would you like to change in Addiscombe? I would like to stem the growth of the food take-away shops and keep a more diverse range of shops. What do you do when not running Addiscombe Dry Cleaners? I love my garden and I spend a lot of time in it. You may not know it but I am rather good at….. Having a snooze on the couch after dinner on Sunday afternoon. You may not know it but I am no good at…. Saying No I dream of…? Getting a little home back in Cyprus (when I retire) so that I can spend more time with my sisters and brother. Describe yourself in 5 words...... Motivated, hard working, good listener, helpful, a thinker, Tony North - Bingham Hire *How long has Bingham Hire been trading in Addiscombe ?* About 30 years *How long have you owned the business ?* 6 Years *What goods & services do you offer ?* We hire anything from a Sledgehammer to an Aluminium Tower. We also offer a repair service for tools and are a Calor Gas stockist. Describe what it was like when you were growing up ? It was always very lively down Lower Addiscombe Road at the weekends. Where the tram now crosses the road there used to be a railway bridge. Underneath it was the ‘Candy Box’ – you could buy any sweets you wanted by the quarter. A couple of doors along was the record shop which always had what you wanted. What do you like most about Addiscombe ? Always seeing a friendly face walking down the road. What would you like to change in Addiscombe ? Traffic Wardens – I understand the need for them but it would be nice to go back to the guys who walked the streets, at least they would talk to you. What do you do when not running Bingham Hire ? I help run an under 12 football team from Addiscombe. I also do voluntary work as a Community First Responder. This entails being called out by the London Ambulance Service to life threatening 999 calls in the local area. I do this from home and use my own vehicle. You may not know it but I am rather good at....... Making a fool of myself. You may not know it but I am no good at....... Being too serious. I dream of......?
