Describe what it was like when you grew up
I came to England from Cyprus when I was twelve years old to join my mum and dad who came to England a couple years earlier, leaving me behind with my sister to finish the Greek junior school. With no knowledge of English at all I went straight into the bottom class of the
2nd year at Kennington County Secondary School for Boys. My school was about a mile and a quarter from home, no school runs in those days, dad left home for work at 5.00 am and mum at 7.00 am. I had to get up and get ready and walk to school. I would walk back home for lunch to save my 50p per week dinner/pocket money to go towards my portable reel to reel tape recorder(£25.00 in those days). Early school days were difficult as you can imagine. A Saturday job in a fruit and veg. shop in the Brixton arcade helped tremendously with the language. I left school at eighteen and then went to Derby College of Art and Technology to do a three year course in Textile Design and Technology hence the connection with Dry Cleaning.
